What are Soft Tissue Sarcomas?

Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Soft tissue sarcomas are a group of rare cancers that begin in the body’s soft tissues such as muscles, fat, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. They can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly in the arms, legs, and trunk.

Treatment depends on the type, size, location, and stage of the sarcoma. Management may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies. A multidisciplinary approach helps achieve better control and recovery.

Common Symptoms & When to Consult

Sarcomas may not cause pain in the early stage. If you notice a lump that is growing or persistent, consult a doctor for evaluation.

  • A painless lump: A lump in arm/leg/trunk that is increasing in size.
  • Lump bigger than 5 cm: Any lump larger than a golf ball needs attention.
  • Deep-seated swelling: Lump felt deep inside muscle tissue.
  • Pain or numbness: If the lump presses on nerves or muscles.
  • Restricted movement: Difficulty moving a joint due to swelling.
  • Persistent abdominal swelling: Fullness or pain if sarcoma is inside abdomen.
  • Unexplained weight loss / fatigue: Especially with a growing lump.

Diagnosis may include ultrasound, MRI/CT scan, and biopsy to confirm the type of sarcoma. Treatment planning is personalized based on reports, staging, and patient needs.
